The only reason I never wanted a police state is because if I ever did commit a crime is the fear that I would be caught. That I'd have no chance of getting away with it. Having been the victim of crime myself, I can’t understand why I thought this way. I have no intention of committing any of these crimes. It’s like I was protecting the people who can’t be bothered to work for a living, or people who believe violent assault is funny. The laws are there for a reason so if I break them I should be sentenced accordingly.
The trouble is that people don’t really know what they want. They want more police on the street to watch out for criminals, to make them feel safe, yet when there are police on the street and they are stopped for questioning about being drunk or speeding, suddenly their attitude changes. Suddenly the police are just in it for the money or they are on a 'power trip'. They only want to catch the average man as he will cost less to catch and prosecute than all the rapists and drug dealers that prowl the streets.
So in the style of Demolition Man I believe that a chip implanted into your hand is the best way to go about making this dream a reality. This chip would contain a gps locator to track your movements wherever you go, some Biometrics that the government seem to be so keen on at the moment, and a unique code.
The advantages of this is that if you get hospital treatment they can scan your chip to make sure you are not abusing the system, or when you buy something they can use this chip to practically eliminate fraud. It would also stop illegal immigrants from doing pretty much anything like shopping, using public transport or receiving health benefits.
What it wouldn't be used for is commercial use. In the Tom Cruse film 'Minority Report', having adverts shouting out your name to get your attention made me feel quite ill.
The main use of this technology is of course crime prevention. If there is a crime committed in a park and someone is stabbed, all the police would have to do is check the computer and see who was near the victim at that time. The computer would show who was near to the incident, thus identifying the killer and without having to appeal for witnesses as they would also show up as being nearby. Only a real idiot would kill someone if they knew their chip was active. If I planned to kill someone I would remove my chip, but then it would show up in my record so that they would know I removed my chip and I probably know the person I planned to kill so I would be a prime suspect that couldn't go anywhere without my chip.
This week I plan to finally read Orwell’s 1984. I can't remember if he was the same guy that wrote animal farm, but I won’t hold it against him. If any part of this book changes my opinion I will write a follow up.
As the saying goes... ‘If you want greater security and peace of mind, you must be prepared to give up some personal freedom.’
So as of now I give up my right to commit murder and possibly get away with it.
